FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
About the ALS ONE Specialty license plate
How much does the ALS ONE Massachusetts Specialty Plate cost?
The ALS ONE License Plate is $40, of which $12 goes to the state (as that is what it costs them to make the plate), and the rest ($28) goes directly to ALS ONE. Every time you renew your registration going forward, all $40 will go directly to ALS ONE.
What do I take to the RMV when I go to get the ALS ONE plate?
You will need to bring a Massachusetts RMV-3 Form from your insurance carrier. If you call them to request it, they typically can furnish it via e-mail or fax quite quickly. Please indicate you are requesting it for a charity plate swap.
If you are swapping your current plate for a charity plate outside of your registration renewal date, you will need to pay a $20 swap fee for the state (it must be in the form of cash or check).
I pre-ordered a plate but never picked it up. What do I do now?
If you pre-ordered an ALS ONE license plate in Massachusetts, prior to November of 2017, you should’ve received a letter in the mail from the RMV in June of 2018 indicating that your plate was ready to be picked up at the RMV that you noted on your plate registration form.
If you did not pick up your plate, your payment is still on-file at the RMV and you can go pick up your plates. Because you didn’t pick up your assigned plates by September 15th 2018, your assigned plates went into public rotation and you will be given plates from the stock of plates they have available at that location.
Leased cars - can mine get one?
Yes! Leased cars can get the ALS ONE plate, too! If you lease a car, you must go in to a full-service RMV location, as on-line ordering is currently not available for leased cars.
Motorcycles - Can they get an ALS ONE plate?
Unfortunately, motorcycles are not eligible for specialty plates in Massachusetts at this time. We will keep you posted if that changes, though!
Commercial Plates: Can they get an ALS ONE plate?
Not yet, but there is legislation being proposed that would allow commercial vehicles to be able to have a specialty plate. Finger’s crossed!
Can I choose my plate number?
Unfortunately, as is the case with all specialty license plates, you are unable to choose your number.
Low digit plates - will there be an auction?
Yes! As is the case with all specialty license plates in Massachusetts, single and double-digit plates will be available via auction and we will let you know when bidding will begin!
